History

The Institute for Agricultural Science of South Vietnam was established on the basis of the Institut des Recherches Agronomiques de l’Indochine (1925), Institute of Agriculture and Forestry Research for the South of Indochina (1937), the Directorate of Agriculture, Forestry and Animal Husbandry Research (1956), and the Institute of Agricultural Research (1968).

After the reunification of the country in 1975, the Institute was renamed the Institute of Agricultural Technology of the Southeast Vietnam. In 1981, the Institute was merged with the Sub-Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology in Ho Chi Minh City and was called Institute of Agricultural Technology of South Vietnam.

Since 1990, the Institute has been called Institute of Agricultural Science of South Vietnam (IAS).

Function and Structure

The IAS is a multi-disciplinary research organization responsible for the following activities:

  • Research on the breeding and screening of plant varieties and animal breeds, and on the technical aspects of crop and livestock production
  • Research on the improvement of existing farming systems and on the transfer of technology
  • Scientific services in agriculture
  • Post-graduate and non-degree training for researchers and technical staff in agriculture

Research activities and the transfer of technology are carried out by 10 research departments:
  1. Department of Food Crop Research (with a green house and a tissue culture laboratory)
  2. Department of Maize Research
  3. Department of Vegetable Research
  4. Department of Legume Research
  5. Department of Soil Science and Fertilizer Research (with a laboratory for soil analysis and a microbiological laboratory)
  6. Department of Plant Protection Research (with 3 laboratories, namely plant disease identification, artificial plant disease inoculation and insect taxonomy)
  7. Department of Farming Systems Research
  8. Department of Pig and Poultry Research
  9. Department of Ruminants Research (with 2 laboratories: milk testing and immunological assay)
  10. Department of Foodstuffs and Animal Nutrition Research, including a laboratory for foodstuff analysis.
The IAS cooperates with 5 affiliated centers:
  1. Hung Loc Agricultural Research Center (in Dong Nai province), 60 km from Ho Chi Minh City, with 89 ha of cultivated lands, devoting mainly to upland crops and fruit trees.
  2. Binh Thang Animal Husbandry Research and Development Center (in Song Be province), 18 km from Ho Chi Minh City, with 6 ha, focusing mainly on pig and poultry.
  3. Ben Cat Ruminant Research and Development Center (in Song Be province), 67 km from Ho Chi Minh City, w9ith more than 700 ha, concentrating on cattle, buffalo, goat and pasture
  4. Dong Thap Muoi Agricultural Research Center (in the Plain of Reeds, Long An province), 170 km from Ho Chi Minh City, with more than 100 ha, devoting mainly to lowland rice, jute, duck and rice-based farming systems
  5. Agricultural Training and Technology Center (at IAS head office).

These departments and center are assisted by 3 bureaus:
  1. Bureau of Human Resources and Administration
  2. Bureau of Planning, Research Management and International Cooperation
  3. Bureau of Finance and Accounting
