Technology implementation plan
At time of reporting, technologies from the Project have been applied in HCMC and other places of Vietnam as follows:
Workpackage 2: Crop improvement
Red Crown 250 tomato and F1-20 pepper have been used in over 5,000 and 6000 harvested ha respectively in HCMC and in at least 7 other provinces (according to Agricultural Extension Centers of provinces and Southern Seed Co.). Other varieties such as Ramina tomato, Kulai, HPBM-1, HPBM -4, Huarena peppers, Asia Cross cabbage and White Shot cauliflower are being introduced to farmers in HCMC and provinces

On-Farm Demonstrations
Three demonstrations to show summer tomato varieties were conducted in summer season, 1999. Of which, one for demonstration of 4 varieties (case 1) in Hoc Mon and 2 for 2 varieties (case 2) in Hoc Mon and Cu Chi. At each location, a field with the area of 1000m2 were used. In the case 1, the field was divided into 4 parts to plant 4 varieties: Red crown 250, Ramina, Glory and 607. In the case 2: 2 parts was used to plant 2 varieties, Red Crown and Ramina. Cultural practices was followed the recommendation of Vegetable Department /IAS.
Seventy to eighty farmers and local authority and media officers have been invited to visit and discuss on the field. Data collected was the rate of people who chose variety (ies) they like and the yields of varieties.
At Tan Thoi Nhi, Hoc Mon, the demonstration of four summer tomato varieties was visited and evaluated by 75 people including 65 farmers, 5 leaders of Farmers’ Association and 2 journalists and representative of District and Commune. The rate of idea that chose Red Crown 250 Ramina, Glory and 607 were 90, 85, 65 and 60 %, respectively. Their yields were 18, 16, 16 and 15 t/ha, respectively. The demonstration at Dong Thanh was visited by 70 people. When asked for choose only one variety, 55 % people chose Red Crown while 45 % preferred Ramina. In Cu Chi, 80 people took part and gave the same rate. The yields of Red crown 250 and Ramina in Dong Thanh were 17 and 15,5 t/ha and in Cu Chi were 16.0 and 16.5 t/ha respectively. Red Crow has advantage in bigger fruits but disadvantage in lower ability of resistance to bacterial wilt in comparison with Ramina.
