Conclusion of Xavier University College of Agriculture

Conclusion

For project partner Xavier University College of Agriculture, the project can be considered as a very successful one. After three years, XUCA is recognized as a major player in the field of urban and periurban agriculture by local and international institutions. Locally, particularly the city government of Cagayan de Oro is seeking the assistance of the College in their endeavor to solve its pressing solid waste management problem through garbage segregation, composting and re-use in city farming. A close tie-up exists with the Local Environment Planning and Management Unit of the City Environmental and Natural Resources Office as well as with the City Agriculture Office. Several farmer groups from Cagayan de Oro City and neighboring provinces visited the research area of the project and got informed about improved production technologies for vegetable production. The improved tomato varieties of Bukidnon Seed Corporation demonstrated in Manresa Farm are presently grown on an area of several hundred hectares based on the amount of seeds already sold.

The research efforts of XUCA and BUSECORP in the project were awarded by the Northern Mindanao Consortium for Agricultural Resources Research and Development (NOMCARRD) by three awards in 1999 and four awards in 2000. The German government through CIM/GTZ granted a request of XUCA to hire PUVeP project manager Dr. Robert J. Holmer as Integrated Expert of for Urban Agriculture and Director of Research for the College in order to continue the research work started and to assist in the implementation of the project results to the respective beneficiaries.

Future research efforts should focus on continuing crop improvement for tomato (fruit set, disease resistance, quality attribute), pepper (larger fruit sizes, virus tolerance) and beans (virus tolerance) and include varietal test for vegetable from other families such as cucurbitaceae, umbelliferae, asteraceae as well as herbal plants. In terms of IPM research, future initiatives should address the control of stem and shoot borer in eggplant as well as the control of solanaceae crops and legumes. Further concern for research should be focused on improving the chemical, physical and biological properties of tropical soils in urban and periurban areas.
