XU Kinaadman Research Center Funds New Ecosan Study
The WHO Guidelines for the Safe Use of Excreta in Agriculture suggest that after a dehydration period of six to twelve months, human faeces will not pose any public health danger when used for agricultural purposes. To verify these recommendations under Philippine conditions, Dr. Gina S. Itchon, Dr. Ma Luisa B Tan XU School of Medicine) and Dr. Robert J. Holmer (XU PUVeP), conducted the research A two-and-a-half day “Training and Workshop on the Reuse of Ecosan Products and Vermicomposting” was conducted from May 20-22, 2008 at the Soil and Water Conservation Foundation (SWCF) Training Center in Roxas, Bilar, Bohol for users of urine-diversion dehydration toilets (UDDT) which were established in the province of Bohol by the DILG-GTZ Water and Sanitation Program. The Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE) in cooperation with Xavier University’s Engineering Resource Center and the Ecosan Training & Research Center for Southeast Asia & the Pacific conducted the seminar “Ecosan for Engineers” on June 19, 2008 at the Pearlmont Inn in Cagayan de Oro City. The meeting was attended by almost 80 participants coming from various government agencies like DPWH, PAG-IBIG, NHA, City Health Office, COWD, PPA, OCW, LGU... There was a great deal of interest for the model of a Philippine urine diverting drying toilet designed by the GTZ Water and Sanitation Programme among the expert public attending the "International Trade Fair for Water - Sewage - Refuse - Recycling (IFAT)" which was held from May 5 - 9, 2008 in Munich, Germany.
