Ensuring the Sustainability of Two Geomatics Laboratories in Central Philippines
The implementation of the European Union-supported GEOTEACH Project shifts into high gear as selected technical staff of Xavier University College of Agriculture (XUCA), University of St. La Salle (USLS-Bacolod) and the Environmental Science for Social Change (ESSC) recently participated in a training workshop on Geomatics Laboratory Setup held at the geomatics laboratory of XUCA. With the conduct of the training, the group was able to finalize the computer network setup of XUCA geomatics laboratory and formulated the standardized manual on procedures of which copies shall be made available in the geomatics laboratories of XUCA and USLS. The training is among the efforts implemented by the project partners to ensure the sustainability of the geomatics laboratories of XUCA and USLS.
The GeoTEACH Project aims to demonstrate practical applications of European geomatics technology and translate them into an empowering tool for academic institutions in community participatory development and human resource mobilization for urban agriculture and environmental management in the Central and Southern Philippines. It is being implemented by a consortium of five institutions from the Philippines and Europe. The consortium is composed of the XUCA (Cagayan de Oro City), USLS (Bacolod City), ESSC, Facultés Universitaires Notre Dame de la Paix (Namur, Belgium) and Fachhochschule Karlsruhe - University of Applied Sciences (Karlsruhe, Germany). Particularly, the intended impacts of the Project are the following: (1) better awareness of geomatics technologies and its possible applications in the fields of urban agriculture and environmental management; (2) increased access to, and use of geomatics technologies for students of relevant courses of USLS and XUCA, but also of practitioners of government, non-government and private business sectors; and (3) participatory ICT approaches applied in the project such as GIS-based community mapping for land-use planning, urban agriculture and integrated solid waste management which will hopefully contribute to better serve local communities and provide an input for sustainable urban development.
