Ecosan Seminar at the Philippine Port Authority

The Cagayan de Oro Philippine Port Authority (PPA) invited Horacio S. Factura III, Intern of the GTZ Water and Sanitation Program, to give a lecture on ecosan principles and technologies at the occasion of their 34th Anniversary Celebration on July 11, 2008.

Mr. Isidro Botaslac, PPA Engineering Services Division Manager, in his welcome remarks announced that the ecological sanitation concept fits very well into the on-going “Clean, Green, and Blue” program of the PPA. While “Clean” means the maintenance of cleanliness in the port, “Green” refers to the planting of trees, ornamentals, and also vegetables and “Blue” refers to the taking care of the sea.

Aside from PPA employees, Mr. Marvin Beja, chairman barangay Puntod, and Mrs. Gertrudes Beja, chairwoman barangay Macabalan, also attended the seminar. During the open forum, both chairpersons commented that sanitation and environmental protection is a major concern for barangays Puntod and Macabalan, which are located along the Cagayan de Oro River shortly before it disembogues into the Macajalar Bay. Many of the barangay residents are disposing their urine and faeces right into the river and to the sea because they do not have access to proper toilet facilities. In their conclusion, the participants appreciated to learn more as regards water pollution and possible mitigating measures such as urine-diverting dehydration toilets (UDDT), which protect and conserve water resources and allow a high level of nutrient recovery for reuse in crop production.

As a follow-up of the seminar, Dr. Robert Holmer, PUVeP Director and Mr. Factura met with Mr. Efren Bollozos, Cagayan de Oro Port Manager, Engr. Botaslac, and other PPA employees on July 14, 2008 to have a guided tour around the PPA building to have a visual inspection of PPA’s vegetable garden, ornamental plant nursery and compost barrels within the port compound. Strategies on how to implement an ecosan pilot project at the port were discussed, in particular the establishment of a UDD toilet, introduction of vermicomposting as well as the reuse of treated ecosan products for the vegetable and ornamental production.
