New CIM Ecosan Expert at Xavier University

Xavier University’s Ecosan Team will be strengthened by Mr. Robert Gensch, who will start his assignment as Ecological Sanitation Advisor at the Jose P. Rizal School of Medicine under the CIM Junior Expert Program in the first week of August 2008.

As a student of Landscape Planning and Architecture at the Technical University Berlin, Germany, his studies exposed him - among others - to issues of international environmental planning, sustainable development, geographic information systems (GIS) as well as project management and participation. In 2001, he conducted a 6-months internship at the Galapagos Archipelago, Ecuador, to work as a landscape architect at the Charles Darwin Research Station. His diploma thesis brought him to Havana, Cuba, in 2005, where he investigated the contribution of urban and periurban agriculture to sustainable urban development.

After he graduated in 2006, he joined the Ecological Sanitation Program at the headquarters of the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) in Eschborn. One of his major tasks was to coordinate the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA) network, in particular to organize international conferences of the network in different parts of the World such as Stockholm, New Delhi and New York. He also lead the SuSanA working group on “Food Security and Productive Sanitations Systems” and assisted in the establishment of the SuSanA working group on “Sustainable Sanitation for Cities” . Aside of giving presentations at international conferences, he also hold lectures at German universities as regards the ecological sanitation concept.

Robert Gensch’s main tasks at his new assignment in Xavier University will be to strengthen and broaden the knowledge and understanding of ecological sanitation in the School of Medicine, to improve lecture and training materials as regards ecological sanitation for the academic and outreach clientele and to coordinate the integration of ecological sanitation projects in outreach programs in order to contribute to overall sustainable development in Northern Mindanao. He will also assist in setting up the new “Ecosan Research and Training Center for Southeast Asia and the Pacific" and help establish closer linkage and cooperation with local and international government and non-government organizations as regards integrated health programs which include ecological sanitation aspects.

We are warmly welcoming Robert Gensch and his family to Cagayan de Oro with best wished for a fruitful, productive and enjoyable stay at the City of Golden Friendship.

Back 30.07.2008.
