German Journalist Claus-Peter Lieckfeld Visits PUVeP

Claus-Peter Lieckfeld, a well-known German journalist and author, visited Cagayan de Oro City and other parts of Northern Mindanao from July 16 -23, 2007. On July 19, he visited the Balulang Elementary School to document the basic hygiene program initiated by CIM expert Dr. Bella Monse as well as the school-based allotment garden and the ecological sanitation programs inside the campus which are spearheaded by PUVeP.

After a discussion with the teachers, pupils and staff, the group dropped by at the city landfill area to get an impression as regards the huge solid waste management challenge in rapidly urbanizing areas of developing countries.

Some of the waste pickers of the landfill site are also members of the nearby Mt. Carmel Allotment Garden, where Mr. Lieckmann had the opportunity to interact with the gardeners regarding the project, especially how it affects and improves their way of living.

The trip was concluded with a visit of the PUVeP office in Manresa Farm including the St. Ignatius Allotment Garden , and the sweet corn production area.
