Ms. Kerstin Lepper of DED Afghanistan visits Allotment Gardens
Ms. Kerstin Lepper, a German national who is working in Afganistan as a peace service consultant for the German Development Service (DED) was in Cagayan de Oro to attend a Civil Peace Service Conference and used the opportunity to visit some of the community outreach projects of PUVeP on July 9, 2007.
The first area to be visited was the allotment garden of Macasandig which was established with financial assistance of Ms. Beatrice Niehoff, a German opera singer and a close personal friend of Ms Lepper. She was impressed by the garden and how it contributes to uplift the socio-economic status of the people near the area.
Of particular interest for her was the ecological sanitation program: “Water is scarce in Kabul and vegetable growing is not practiced anymore in the city. This project could be replicated in Kabul,” said Ms. Lepper. She also had the chance to meet and interact with the gardeners of the Mt. Carmel allotment garden. The tour concluded with a visit at PUVeP office in Manresa Farm.
