Belgian Friends Donate 10,000 Euro for Allotment Garden Project
Ms. Analiza U. Miso, presently on study leave in Germany, represented PUVeP at the occasion of the 75th anniversary celebration of the Sint-Amandsberg Allotment Garden, Gent, Belgium, on invitation of its president, Mr. Willy Goethals.
With great joy it was learnt that the provincial government of Gent donated 7500 Euro to establish a 9th allotment garden in Cagayan de Oro. The allotment community of Sint-Amandsberg is raising additional funds for this project by selling the "Liber Amicorum" and have already collected some 1500 Euro. An individual donor has contributed further 1000 Euro for the same purpose.

The city of Gent has played an important role in Philippine history. In 1891, the Philippine National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, published the novel "El Filibusterismo" in this Belgian city. It portrays the rampant injustices suffered by the Filipinos, spun around the tragic story of a man determined to fight the oppressors, albeit in devious and violent ways.
This new project will further strengthen existing relationships of PUVeP and Cagayan de Oro City with Belgian partners, such as the city of Dinant and the FUNDP university in Namur, with whom earlier projects, especially the Asia Urbs and AsiaIT&C projects were conducted.
Further, St. Gertrude de Nivelles, the patron saint of the Cagayan de Oro allotment gardeners, whose feast day is celebrated every March 17 , hails from Belgium.
On behalf of the urban poor communities who will benefit of this project, PUVeP is expressing its deep gratitude to the allotment gardeners of Sint-Amandsberg, the provincial government of Gent and especially Mr. Willy Goethals for their initiative and friendship.
Daghan Salamat!
