RUAF-CFF Regional Advisory Committee Meeting
The Cities Farming for the Future Program of the RUAF Foundation conducted its Regional Advisory Committee Meeting for South and Southeast Asia in SEARSOLIN on November 29, 2007.
It was participated by Dr. Robert Simmons, (Coordinator of RUAF-CFF Program South and Southeast Asia based at the International Water Management Institute in Hyderabad, India), Dr. Thilak T. Ranasinghe, (Director of Agriculture, Western Province, Sri Lanka), Mr. Komaravolu Venkata Subrahmanya Prasad (AME foundation, India), Robert Gensch and Horacio S. Factura III (Ecosan Program, GTZ Germany) as well as Dr. Robert J. Holmer (Director, XU-PUVeP).
The activities during the meeting consisted of a review of the urban and periurban agricultural activities in the pilot and partner cities of the CFF program in South and Southeast Asia, namely Gampaha (Sri Lanka), Bangalore and Hyderabad (India), as well as Cagayan de Oro (Philippines).
This was followed by a discussion on how to strengthen the interaction of RUAF with activities of the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance. It was announced the RUAF is planning to come out with a special issue of the Urban Agriculture Magazine on ecological sanitation in 2008. The 3rd program phase of RUAF (2009-2010) was presented by Dr. Rob Simmons which will allow a closer cooperation and exchange of best practices between Bangalore, Gampaha and Cagayan de Oro City.
The participants had also the opportunity to see the different farming technologies demonstrated in the St. Ignatius Allotment Garden area in Manresa Farm, including the UDD toilet. A courtesy call with Hon. City Mayor Constantino Jaraula followed, where the city mayor expressed his full support to further institutionalize urban and periurban activities in Cagayan de Oro.
