Tigum Kagayanon Inc. Approves Treadle Pump Project

Tigum Kagayanon Inc. (TGI), a Community Service NGO in Cagayan de Oro donated six so-called treadle pumps to the allotment garden associations of Gusa, Kauswagan, Laspasan and Macasandig to improve the irrigation of their vegetable crops. This was the first donation and first beneficiaries of TGI. The contract signing ceromony between TGI and the Xavier Science Foundation took place on February 8, 2007, at the Red Palm Hotel.

The treadle pump is a low-lift, high-capacity, human-powered pump which can lift five to seven cubic meters of water per hour from wells and boreholes up to seven meters deep as well as from surface water sources such as lakes and rivers. The treadle pump has two significant advantages over motorized pumps for irrigation of agricultural land of less than one hectare.

First, the treadle pump is considerably less expensive than motorized pumps. Second, the treadle pump costs much less to operate, having no fuel and only limited repair and maintenance costs. Since the treadle pump employs the user's body weight and leg muscles in a comfortable walking motion, use of the pump can be sustained for extended periods of time without excessive fatigue.

TGI is an association of people who grew up in Cagayan de Oro City many of whom still reside in the city while some have migrated to other parts of the world but “whose hearts have remained in the City of Golden Friendship.” This association, organized in Year 2005 during the TIGUM KAGAYAN 2005 in Cagayan de Oro, envisioned “A Cagayan de Oro that remains a community of friendly people and while attuned to the times still maintains a quality of life that is enhanced by its natural endowments and ecological balance never losing its sight for future generations.”

Its mission is to be “a conduit for all assistance to various peoples, groups or communities of Cagayan de Oro City and Northern Mindanao from Kagayanons from all corners of the globe who contribute towards the attainment of the above mission.” The TGI has set-up a system like a “bridge” that connects benefactors, donors, etc with needy groups and communities in Northern Mindanao especially Cagayan de Oro, for humanitarian, developmental, educational, ecological conservation purposes.

The current officers include: Victor M. Gabor (President), Eloisa G. Pedrajas (Treasurer). Azucena R. Ballesteros (Secretary), Edmundo R. Chavez, Jr. (Executive Director), Marinela N. Velez (Auditor), other members of the Board: Anselmo B. Mercado, Sonia A. Lopez, Susie E. Jacutin, Edsel H. Salvana, and Samuel G. Cayetuna. Honorary members of the Board are the incumbent presidents of the various groupings of Cagayanon International in various parts of the USA, Canada, etc.

TGI is open to any person of goodwill, peace-loving, willing to help in whatever way s/he can to attain TGI’s vision-mission. Donations are welcome (e.g. land, cash, valuables, other useful resources). TGI’s address is: 31 Cruz Taal corner Capistrano Sts., Cagayan de Oro City, Tel (8822) 721197, email address: tigum06@yahoo.com or axle_inc@yahoo.com.
