Activities as Urban Agriculture Expert

Assisting the College in its applied research and outreach operations in the field of crop science, particular urban agriculture:

  1. Development of applied research programs appropriate to improve fruit and vegetable production and supply in urban and periurban areas of Cagayan de Oro City for fresh market and processing.
  2. Implementation of research and outreach programs of the College in the field of urban agriculture in collaboration with personnel of other departments of XU, national and international agricultural organizations, government, non-government and farmers‘ organizations as well as with the private sector.
  3. establish participative on-farm experiments and practice-oriented research in sustainable horticultural development together with extensionists of the College, as well as with government- and non-government organizations. This will be particularly in the field of crop improvement for fruits and vegetables (identification of appropriate varieties which are adapted to the climate of the tropical lowland, have resistance or tolerance to prevalent diseases and pests, and have superior quality attributes for the fresh market and processing), integrated pest management (developing strategies to minimize the application of chemical pesticides, introducing environmental-friendly approaches such as the usage of parasitoids and botanicals), water management technologies for dry and rainy season, as well as integrated plant nutrition systems (particularly the use of composts from organic city and farm wastes). These measures will be accompanied by socioeconomic studies of the farming communities as well as market analyses to ensure the development of crop production technologies that fit the socioeconomic and anthropological situation of the beneficiaries and, thus, contribute to the sustainability of the extension work.
  4. organize seminars and workshops involving the academe, farmers‘ organizations, government and non-government organizations, private enterprises and other institutions,
  5. link the academe and the farmers with regard to actual and theoretical farming systems.
